Psoriasis and Ayurveda Psoriasis is a chronic (long-lasting) skin disorder that causes scaling and inflammation. It is currently suspected to be autoimmune in origin. It occurs when the immune system sends out faulty signals that speed up the growth cycle of skin cells. The scaly patches caused by Psoriasis, called psoriasis plaques, are areas of inflammation and excessive skin production. Psoriasis is not contagious. The Ayurvedic View: According to Ayurveda, Psoriasis or Mandal is caused by an imbalance in the Pitta Dosha or imbalance of all three doshas. Pitta symbolizes fire and is heating in nature; it usually gets imbalanced due to faulty dietary habits and excessive and imbalance lifestyles habits. The imbalanced Pitta manifests in the skin and causes accumulation of ama or toxins. These toxins accumulate in body tissues such as rasa (nutrient plasma), rakta (blood), mansa (muscles) and lasika (lymph) and contaminate them, leading to skin conditions such as Psoriasis. Stress and Psoriasis: Stress can cause psoriasis to flare for the first time or aggravate existing psoriasis. Relaxation and stress reduction may help prevent stress from impacting psoriasis. Ayurvedic recommendations for Psoriasis The use of curd in the form of buttermilk has proved useful in psoriasis and it is good to drink it 1-3 cups a week. Do not control natural urges like vomiting, urination, bowel emptying etc. Avoid taking spicy food and consume only easily digestible food. Do not eat too much of salty, sour or acidic foods Avoid consuming opposite foods(food combing at the bottom of the page) Include more fruits, vegetable, fruit juices in your diet. Applying aloe vera cream thinly to irritated skin and rubbing lightly is effective. Apply coconut oil 3 times a day to the affected area regularly to maintain the moisture level of the skin. Avoid using harsh and commercial soaps while taking bath instead using neem and turmeric soap instead. Avoid pricking, peeling and scratching skin Use separate, clean clothes and towel for your use. Mental health is necessary for an effective treatment of psoriasis. Try deep breathing and relaxation exercise to reduce stress. Exposing to mild sunlight daily for 30 minutes will improve the texture of the affected area of the skin. Home Remedies for Psoriasis Olive oil can be applied over the psoriasis patches. It gives relief from pain, swelling and itching. This is one of the effective home remedies for psoriasis. Cabbage leaves can be used as compresses and can be applied over affective parts. These cabbage leaves also work as an effective home remedy for psoriasis. Vitamin E therapy has been found effective in the psoriasis treatment. A daily dose of 200-800 I.U is recommended as they reduce itching of the area. Neem is a blood purifying herb and is found to be very effective natural remedy for psoriasis and other skin problems. AYURVEDIC VIEW ON ARTHRITIS Arthritis is one of the most common ailments for which Ayurvedic help is being sought these days. Disease process of arthritis according to Ayurveda are that arthritic pain is caused by the aggravation of vata (air) dosha. Arthritis is a condition which is caused by accumulation of ama and aggravation of vata (Ama is a toxic by-product of improper digestion). This ama circulates in the whole body and deposits or gets collected at the sites which are weaker. When it deposits in the joints and at the same time there is aggravation of vata, it result s in a disease called amavata. This amavata is arthritis. Common Causes of Arthritis •Poor dietary habits such as raw eating or dried foods. •Improper food combinations. •Taking in iced beverages and cold food and drinks. •Over-activity (i.e. excessive exercising, jogging, jumping…) •Excessive weight bearing (obesity, overweight) •“Kavaigunya” or weakened space in the joints; due to genetics, past injury or trauma, improper ergonomics , long-term jobs that have put stress on the joints, etc •Repressed emotions •Chronic Vata derangement in the colon •Chronic toxins in the colon Ayurvedic recommendation for arthritis -The digestion should be improved so that no further ama is produced. -Efforts should be made to relieve the pain and inflammation, using proper herbs such as turmeric and exercises. - Seasonal detox would be very beneficial . -Taking two tea spoons of lemon juice mixed in 250 ml of warm water and a tea spoon of honey. This is good remedy to take twice a day, morning and evening. Ayurvedic Remedies for Arthritis No matter which category of Arthritis you may fall into, there are a few common lines of action to begin treatment: -To detox the body in order to to cleanse the colon -Burn the toxins and increase (or balance) the digestion. Turmeric for Arthritis Turmeric: The active ingredient in this spice, curcumin, interferes with three important inflammation-producing enzymes—so it disrupts the inflammatory process at three different stages, said Dr. Lonsdorf. Turmeric also may provide some protection against the damage that pain-relieving medications can do to the gastrointestinal tract. Turmeric is yellow color spice which has been used in India for thousands of years as a spice and medicinal herb. Recently, science has started to back up what the Indians have known for a long time… it really does contain compounds with medicinal properties. These compounds are called curcuminoids, the most important of which is curcumin. Curcumin is the main active ingredient in turmeric. It has powerful anti-inflammatory effects and is a very strong antioxidant. However, the curcumin content of turmeric is not that high… it’s around 3%, by weight. Most of the studies on this herb are using turmeric extracts that contain mostly curcumin itself, with dosages usually exceeding 1 gram per day. It would be very difficult to reach these levels just using the turmeric spice in your foods. Therefore, if you want to experience the full effects, then you need to take an extract that contains significant amounts of curcumin or taking the turmeric tablets. Unfortunately, curcumin is poorly absorbed into the bloodstream. It helps to consume black pepper with it, which contains pipeline… a natural substance that enhances the absorption of curcumin by 2000% .I personally prefer to swallow a few whole peppercorns along with my curcumin supplement, in order to enhance absorption. I followed Bita's recommendations to improve my diet as well as how I ate. After eight weeks, there was already a great improvement in digestion, hands, pain and fatigue. Subsequently I did a detox treatment of the whole body with Ayurvedic massages, herbs and diet. All this had an extraordinary impact on my health. It is the first time that I feel as well physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually. Contrary to my expectations my legs have decreased, my legs were less heavy, less pain to these. I can now walk freely and for longer than half an hour, which was the maximum time I could do. My eczema has improved a lot, one hand is healed and the other hand has little and it will go to the next detox. DINACHARYA AYURVEDIC DAILY ROUTINE FOR HEALTH AND REJUVENATION Ayurveda gives more emphasis on prevention of diseases than treatment. Therefore, it is not only limited to management and treatment of diseases. Other principles are also described in context to prevention and dincharya is one of those. Principle of dincharya is basically related with time management. There are nine karana dravya (responsible factors) behind the creation and manifestation of Universe and these are panchamahabhuta (space, air, fire, water & earth), mana (mind), atma (soul), kala (time) and disha (directions). So, time is very important factor and affects every creation of Universe. It is one of the causative factors (i.e. trividha hetu) in the initiation of diseases. There are various changes which have been occurred by the impact of time and later results in manifestation of various diseases. If these changes are terminated by different activities described under the head of dincharya, diseases are prevented. This is the basic principle behind dincharya and other charya described according to various time fractions. Today’s a new word has been emerged very rapidly i.e. “life-style disorders”. This word is basically concerned with chronic non-communicable diseases which have been taken the form of epidemic in current era. These diseases can be prevented by following principle of dincharya life-style. According to the new science of Circadian Medicine our genes have literally lost their ability to hear the natural cycles of nature. Scientists are only now beginning to understand exactly how important it is for the body to stay in rhythm with nature. In our modern high-tech world, this is becoming a challenge, as more and more people have what some are calling a “nature deficit disorder.” While Ayurveda has touted the importance of a connection with nature for millennia, it was nice to read in a recent issue of Scientific American that Circadian* Medicine may revolutionize medicine as we know it. Ayurvedic Dinacharya or the daily routine is an imperative part of all healthcare protocols. Having a consistent routine creates regularity in the body and in the mind. When we can fill each day with essential Self-care practices, eat at proper times and create a regular sleep schedule, our whole beings are able to function at a higher level. Our focus, clarity and emotions become stabilized and our hormones balanced. Our energy reaches greater levels and our self-worth and wellbeing begin to shine. With all the positive effects Dinacharya or daily routine should be utilized by every individual, no matter their body-type, age, gender or level of health. Although we all have unique needs, it is well known that every-body will benefit from creating a consistent and healthy routine in their life. MORNING DINACHARYA (ROUTINE): •Arise early in the morning, preferably before the sunrise (this depends on body state of balance) •Wash your face. •Brush your teeth with natural tooth powder or paste. •Scrape your tongue with a tongue scraper which stimulates digestion and elimination, preferably a copper scraper. •Neti pot or nasal rinse specially during fall and winter. •Drink a large glass of warm water – with lemon out of a copper cup is ideal. •Evacuate bowels and bladder, ideally within the first hour of waking up. •Do 10-15 minutes of morning yoga or 15-30-minute brisk walk or exercise. •Perform oil pulling – swish herbarized coconut or sesame oil in your mouth for 10-15 minutes while showering. •Shower or bathe. •Enjoy your daily abhyanga (self-massage using oil). Best with our Lymphatic Massage Oil or Tri-Doshic Massage Oil – this can also be done in shower). If morning not enough time you can always do your oil massage at night before sleep this will also promote a good night sleep. •5-10 minutes of breathing exercise (pranayama) seasonal breathing exercises for your dosha. •5-15-minute meditation or sit in silence. Mindfulness awareness of the breath or mantra meditation. •Breakfast: eat a small amount, but make it big enough to get you through to lunch without needing a snack. Quantity may vary based on body type. MIDDAY DINACHARYA(ROUTINE) •Lunch: Eat main meal at lunch time and best time to eat is between 12h00-13h00. Try to eat in mindful manner without reading or computer and take your time to chew your food well! If possible and not hungry avoid snack until dinner. •Brief rest on left side after a light walking for 10 to 15 minutes is very beneficial for digestion. EVENING DINACHARYA(ROUTINE): •Supper: the lighter and earlier, preferably before 18h00. •Evening walk for at least 30 minutes after supper will help the digestion and relax the daily stress. •Breathing exercise and meditation. •Go to bed by 10pm. From an Ayurvedic perspective, following this Dinacharya also aligns you with nature’s rhythms each day. For instance, exercising is most optimal in the morning, between 6am and 10am, when the body is in its Kapha phase and is naturally physically strongest. Eating the largest meal of the day at lunchtime aligns with the pitta time of day, from 10am until 3pm, when the digestive fire is strongest. Between 3pm and 6pm, which is the Vata time of day, the nervous system is most active, so it is beneficial during this time to do calming, centering activities such as mental work and meditation. And perhaps a little nap for 30-45 minutes. BITA BITAJIAN TRANSFORMATION AYURVEDIC CENTER TEL;450-671-8508 EMAIL:Ayurveda,bita@gmail.com

Ayurveda and the digestion Eating and digestion are daily, life-sustaining events. According to Ayurveda a healthy digestive system is a cornerstone of well-being and that every disease is believed to arise from inefficient digestion. Food consumed will not provide good health unless it is digested properly. Even if the food is high quality and pure, it will be harmful to the body if it is not fully digested. The digestion of food is carried out in the stomach (jathar) which is referred metaphorically as “fire” (agni). The agnis/fires are descriptive categories for the action of various types of enzymes and metabolic processes. You want a balanced agni that is neither too weak nor too excessive. The quality of agni varies depending upon one’s dosha: vata, pitta, or kapha. In vata and kapha types, agni tends to be weak and the digestive system “cold,” sluggish, or irregular, which can result in malabsorption disorders, chronic constipation, loose stools, and gas. In pittas, the fires of agni can become excessive and cause heartburn, acid reflux, colitis, and other burning sensations. Here are five important eating habits which will promote a healthy digestion: 1-Avoid drinking ice water, ice cold food and drinks at all times. And favor warm drink during meal time. If you do need to take cool drinks specially to balance the excess pitta in the body it is best to for take them in between meals. 2-Make lunch the main and largest meal of the day as the digestive fire is strongest between 12:00-13:00 p.m. Dinner is best before 18:30 P.m and should be the lightest meal of the day.Only eat when hungry and drink when thirsty. 3-Avoid eating and snacking after 10.00 p.m. This is the time that we should be in bed so that body can burn off the toxins and digest the food that has consumed during the day. 4-Minimize and if possible avoid the use of leftovers, canned, frozen or preserved foods. 5-Minimize the amount of raw eating specially during fall and winter. Do not eat contraindicated foods: Dairy and fruit; melon after other food; fruits with other food; fish and milk; eggs with milk; lemons with milk or yogurt.
